The Madison Athenaeum It is increasingly clear that institutions of higher education in the United States need to invest more time, expertise and resources in two purposes: conveying to secondary schools university-level expecations for study; and, and helping students learn the habits and traditions that can prepare for them for the challenges they will confront in post-secondary education. In response to these two challenges, The Madison Center has developed the Madison Athenaeum.
Athenaeum Faculty and Staff The Athenaeum is staffed by faculty and students from Delta State University who are dedicated to these purposes. Our faculty and students are dedicated to helping students make the transition between high school and university. Athenaeum faculty have been chosen because of their subject-matter expertise and their dedication to teaching. Student tutors and support staff are chosen from meritorious students here at Delta State and are keenly aware of the need for a supportive but challenging environment when introducing students to university life.
The Athenaeum and Academics Within the context of the purposes noted above, the Athenaeum has the follow expectations for students. First and foremost, students cannot achieve excellence when they are limited by the prejudice of low expectations. Second, students can pursue excellence only when they are challenged by thoughtful and dedicated mentors. Third, the earlier students can be challenged to develop the habits and behaviors of the excellent students, the more likely they will be to succeed in university studies. Finally, the best preparation for university studies is to be challenged by mentors while experiencing the day-to-day pressures of a university schedule.
