Rules and Procedures

We have two purposes in mind in this section.  First, we take seriously the safety and health of each student.  Second, we must maintain the academic integrity of the program in the sense that it must run smoothly and efficiently.   The rules and regulations listed on this page are intended to raise student awareness about their obligations to themselves as future university students, as well as to other students and program participants on this campus.  Students must read and follow these rules and we ask that participants and parents sign a memorandum of understanding.

1. Any student who has a job that interrupts the program or who expects to take a vacation during the three-week period is not eligible for the program.

2. Students must leave their cell phones in their dormitories during scheduled daily activities.  Cell phones may be confiscated and returned at checkout the following Friday.  In case of emergency, students will be permitted to use a staff member’s cell phone to contact a parent or legal guardian.  If parents need to contact a student in the case of an emergency, they should call Josh Walker or Samantha Styders.

3. All students are required to attend nightly study hall, Sunday through Thursday, from 7:30pm to 9:30pm.

4. Any student exceeding the maximum allowance of three unexcused absences, including absences from study hall, will be removed from the program.

5. Tardiness for any course meeting will be considered one-half absence.

6. Sleeping in class will be counted as an absence.

7. Personal vehicles are not allowed on campus.

8. Any students caught outside their dormitories between the hours of 9:30pm and 7:00am without a staff escort will be removed from the program.

9. Male and female students may not visit other dorms.  Any student attempting to enter a dormitory to which they are not assigned will be removed from the program.

10. Checkout will begin promptly at 5:00pm on Friday. Students should be collected in front of their assigned dormitories.

11. Students may only be signed out by a parent or legal guardian. Alternative escorts must be registered with Athenaeum administrators at least 24 hours before Friday check out. Forms will be provided.

12. If it is necessary for a student to leave campus before Friday checkout, Athenaeum staff (Ms. Garcia or Mr. Hudson) must be informed by the student’s parent or legal guardian.

13. Students must respect dormitory quiet hours, from 9pm to 9am. College students will also be trying to study and sleep in the dorms.

14. Students must be prepared for room checks at 10:00pm. Students are not permitted to leave their rooms after room checks are completed.

15. Students must sleep in their assigned dorm rooms.

16. Please be courteous and knock before entering another person’s room or bathroom facility.

17. All students will be expected to dress appropriately. The easiest way to do this is to follow the “4-Bs” rule: no bust, belly, bottom or back showing.  Students who violate this rule will be asked to change their clothing before leaving the dormitories. Repeated offenses will be sufficient grounds for expulsion from the program.

18. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Any student caught plagiarizing will immediately be asked to leave the program.

19. Throughout the duration of the program, students may be filmed and photographed for publicity purposes. The Madison Athenaeum retains unlimited rights to publish and/or reproduce these materials.

20. Students are liable for any and all damages to Athenaeum and Delta State property (e.g. calculators, library computers, assigned textbooks, dormitory property, etc.)

21. This document reflects general guidelines and expectations for the Athenaeum program. Students are expected to behave in a respectful and appropriate manner at all times. Athenaeum administrators reserve the right to remove students from the program for reasons that might not be reflected in this document.

22. At any time, parents and legal guardians can contact Emily Garcia, 662.719.0636 for any additional assistance.

Students who do not follow the policies and procedures of the Athenaeum program, Housing Guidelines, and Delta State rules and regulations may be dismissed from the Madison Athenaeum. Students are responsible for knowing the policies and following all guidelines. Athenaeum staff expects responsible and respectful behavior from students at all times.
